Ask the Doctor

We are often asked questions that are of interest to many of our readers. Here is Dr. Robert Musson's response to one of our latest inquiries.

Question:
What are varicose & spider veins, and how can I get rid of them?

Answer:
Varicose veins are superficial veins which have become dilated (widened and filled with blood) and in which the valves no longer function properly. Varicose veins are the abnormally large ‘ropy’ veins seen close to the surface of the legs. They are a sign that the circulation returning the blood to the heart may not be flowing properly. The spider veins are the smaller, less obtrusive veins. Known in the medical world as telangiectasias or sunburst varicosities - they lie close to the surface of the skin. While these two vein conditions are not preventable, they are TREATABLE! We perform an extensive history and physical exam along with a real time venous ultrasound of the legs for all of our patients prior to treatment. This painless procedure identifies problem veins and gives our medical staff a detailed road map of their veins, which is extremely important in formulating an individual treatment plan exclusively tailored for each patient. Depending on the locations and size of the problem veins, most patients at this point will require a series of injections (compression sclerotherapy) to eradicate their varicose veins.

A small number of patients with larger veins may first require an outpatient surgical procedure generally lasting 30-45 minutes. The goal of this procedure (usually done under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia) is to address an underlying valve problem. This outpatient surgical procedure is then followed by a series of sclerotherapy injections which now become much more effective. Even small unsightly spider veins can be safely and almost painlessly erased.
